At Nittardi, we are delighted to unveil Cosmo, our latest addition and a true expression of our passion for crafting exceptional wines.
The Vineyard
Cosmo originates from Nittardi’s Mongibello delle Mandorlaie vineyards in Maremma, a breathtaking location just 8 kilometers from the sea and 250 meters above sea level, in the prestigious Morellino di Scansano region. The vineyard’s sandy soils, enriched with granite, schist, and volcanic layers, impart a distinct mineral character to the wine, reflecting the essence of this unique terroir.
The Wine
Cosmo is crafted entirely from Roussanne, a grape variety that has its roots in the Rhône Valley and finds a natural home in Maremma due to the regions’ shared characteristics. Planted in 2014, these vines now debut their first vintage with Cosmo 2023. The wine is aged for eight months in acacia wood barrels, chosen to enhance its richness while preserving its finesse and delicate aromatics.
The name Cosmo draws inspiration from ancient Greek, meaning “order, harmony, and beauty.” This philosophy is reflected not only in the wine itself but also in its label, which incorporates the Golden Proportion, a timeless symbol of balance and elegance—perfectly mirroring the wine’s character.
The 2023 Vintage
The 2023 growing season presented its challenges but ultimately delivered exceptional quality. A rainy spring was followed by warm summer months and ideal harvest conditions in September and October. With careful vineyard management, we mitigated the risks of mildew, resulting in classic wines from this vintage. The Roussanne for Cosmo was harvested on September 7th, showcasing lower alcohol, vibrant acidity, and a light yet persistent structure that promises long aging potential.
Tasting Notes
Cosmo 2023 greets the eye with a deep golden hue, hinting at the richness within. The nose is a symphony of enticing aromas—honey, ripe apricot, peach, and a touch of brioche. On the palate, it is wonderfully elegant, with a silky texture and complex layers of beeswax, citrus, and fresh acidity. A slight bitterness on the finish adds to its intrigue, perfectly balancing the wine’s richness and freshness.
